Man charged over East Vancouver fire that caused $100k in damage

VPD Arson investigators are crediting the public for tips which helped lead to the arrest

A 46-year-old Vancouver man has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire in East Vancouver that caused more than $100,000 in damage.

Jason Acoose was allegedly captured on CCTV lighting a blaze in the east lane of Nanaimo Street at Copley Street, just after 3pm on Aug. 21.

Vancouver Police Deparment released footage of the incident earlier this week.  In the video the arson suspect can be seen walking down the alleyway and then stopping and putting his hand in a tall hedge. He walks away and moments later the hedge erupts in flames.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services responded to the fire and put out the blaze, but it destroyed a hedge, two garages with vehicles inside and a utility pole. Fortunately, no one was injured.

Vancouver Police patrol officers arrested Acoose near Commercial Drive and East 12th Avenue on Friday.

He has been charged with two counts of arson to property and remains in custody.
