A man was arrested early Thursday morning after allegedly stealing a bus in Surrey and taking it for a drive.

Sgt. Clint Hampton, media spokesperson with Metro Vancouver Transit Police, told Vancouver Is Awesome in an email that the bus operator for the N19 night bus was on a break when the incident took place.

"This occurred early this morning around 2 a.m.," writes Hampton.

"A bus operator for the N19 night bus was taking a washroom break. The bus was left running and a man boarded and stole the bus."

Hampton notes that there were no other passengers on the bus, and that GPS was used to find its location. Once it was found, he reports that the bus was stopped at Fraser Highway and 176th Street.

"With the assistance of the Surrey RCMP, the suspect was arrested. The suspect, a 28-year-old man, was held in custody."

Hampton adds that transit police will be forwarding a charge of theft of a motor vehicle over $5,000.
