Marpole residents bring protest to steps of city hall

More than 200 Marpole residents protested outside city hall Thursday to urge Mayor Gregor Robertson to reverse the city’s decision to open two modular housing buildings for homeless people on a property at West 59th Avenue and Heather Street.

Two of the residents also delivered a 5,000-name petition to deputy city manager Paul Mochrie. The residents say they agree that homeless people need more housing and services in Vancouver, but not at 59th and Heather, which is in a neighbourhood that has three schools.

“How can it be considered a safe place for the kids?” said resident Long Tran, standing outside city hall.

The project calls for 78 self-contained suites. Community Builders, a non-profit association, will manage the complex, which is expected to open in January.
