NDP Matt Toner defeated by former mayor in Vancouver-False Creek

Digital media expert and first-time candidate Matt Toner lost the Vancouver-False Creek seat to former mayor Sam Sullivan Tuesday.

Digital media expert and first-time candidate Matt Toner lost the Vancouver-False Creek seat to former mayor Sam Sullivan Tuesday.

Toner, the NDP candidate for the riding, went head-to-head with Liberal candidate and longtime politician Sullivan in what he called a "great fight."

Although Toner was briefly ahead at the start, Sullivan quickly led in the polls and took the seat for the Vancouver-False Creek riding. At press time, he had 53.9 per cent of the vote to 35.06 per cent for Toner.

Toner said he feels his team did themselves proud regardless.

He laid low on Tuesday, watching the results with his team in a Yaletown suite, which he quipped had a lagoon that was something to throw myself in.

He said he was happy to spend the night with his team, many of which in are in their early 20s and had never been involved in politics before Toner.

Theres lots of ways to make change, said Toner.

This slogan can we do it. Can we bring the creative people and tech people together? We did that. Got many people to vote who have never voted in their lives, he said.

He said he felt Sullivan had an advantage and he feels he did well for the NDP.

This is a pretty Liberal riding, he said. We did terrible here last time around. He had the high ground. We had to overcome the high ground.

The results of the Vancouver-False Creek riding were highly anticipated because of Toners first time status and complex non-political background in digital media, economics and the navy up against Sullivans controversial political background.

Toner added he is used to picking himself up because of his entrepreneurial background.

Im a startup guy, he said. No one succeeds on their first startup. You take what you learn from your first startup and apply it to your second startup.
