No new snow today, but Vancouver transit users will still face delays, detours in icy conditions

The snowfall warning has been lifted for Metro Vancouver, but the cold, wet and icy conditions left behind are still prompting TransLink to take extra precautions on several routes, including SkyTrain lines and buses.

The snowfall warning has been lifted for Metro Vancouver, but the cold, wet and icy conditions left behind are still prompting TransLink to take extra precautions on several routes, including SkyTrain lines and buses.

“Snowy conditions are still persisting today so be prepared, dress warmly and give yourself extra time for your commute,” warns TransLink in a statement.

TransLink says customers on Wednesday will have to contend with reductions in service on SkyTrain: “Millennium and Expo Lines are operating with less frequency than normal. Fewer trains can run as all of them must be staffed in these conditions,” the transit agency tweeted this morning.

While we aren’t going to see snow falling today, there is still an accumulation of snow and slush on roads, and with overnight lows below 0 C, there may be icy conditions that lead to delays for buses, and possible re-routing if some streets are impassable.

“Expect extra crowding on some routes. To provide improved traction, many articulated buses have been switched with standard, 40 foot buses. This will mean some modified service, with increased crowding and the possibility of passups in some areas,” notes TransLink on its alerts page.

Additionally, HandyDart continues to offer only essential service Wednesday.

On Tuesday, many SkyTrain riders noted an easier, emptier commute than usual, despite the restricted service. Thanks to widespread closures for schools, universities, and offices, there was also a dramatically reduced commuting population riding transit. Without a “snow day” keeping many off their weekday routine Wednesday, commuting woes may arise again.

Bus riders, on the other hand, faced significant delays Tuesday evening.
