Vancouver police have released the identity of the 31-year-old Vancouver woman who was found dead at a rooming house on Granville Street early on Wednesday morning.

Chelsea Lynn De Forge was Vancouver's 13th homicide victim of 2018.

Police were first called to the Regal Hotel on Granville Street near Helmcken Street at around 4:30 a.m. on August 1. They had been notified about a strong odor on the second floor. They found the deceased woman inside one of the apartments.

At a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Const. Jason Doucette said "detectives do not believe this was a random event and advise that there is no risk to the general public."

Police do not believe she was a resident of the hotel, which he said operates as a long-term rental.

Doucette would not disclose when it's believed the woman died. Investigators have been looking at video and talking to witnesses, urging others to come forward.

Asked what led investigators to deem it a homicide, Doucette said "that's why it took us a day to go public."

Police are called to all sudden deaths and he said it was important to "slow things down and not overlook things."

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information about this homicide is asked to call detectives are 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
