A rainfall warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver as an intense frontal system rapidly approaches the south coast.

Environment Canada issued the warning early in the morning on Wednesday, Jan. 22, noting that rain, at times heavy, is expected. Moderate rain is expected to start midday and become heavy at times later tonight.

East Vancouver Island near Bowser is expected to see the most rainfall, with the forecast calling for 80 to 100 mm of rain before it eases Thursday morning.

The storm is expected to bring up to 80 mm of rain to the Howe Sound, the North Shore and the northeast and central Metro Vancouver regions. However, the heavy rainfall is expected to ease by midday Thursday.

Rainfall warning in effect for:

  • Metro Vancouver - central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver - North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver - northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.

After Vancouver received 34 cm of snowfall in five days last week, this week's forecast is calling for seven straight days of rainfall.
