While it isn’t uncommon for a lake to freeze over in B.C., not all frozen lakes are created equal.

Take, for example, Lake Windermere, a stunning body of water that turns into a sparkling showstopper during the chilly months.

What’s more, the Lake Windermere Whiteway was named the longest skating pathway in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records in 2014.

The naturally frozen trail measures a whopping 29.98 km long and is located in Invermere near the Alberta border. The groomed track provides the perfect stomping grounds for a plethora of winter activities – from relaxed skating to fast-paced hockey, cross-country skiing to a scenic stroll – the icy stretch is an ideal place to spend a winter’s day.

Nestled in the breathtaking Columbia Valley, the area is also a popular place for ice fishing. A company called Reel Axe Adventures even offers “lux” ice fishing huts for their tours. What’s more, all of the, “ice fishing trips include your fishing equipment, a fire and grill to cook lunch, experienced guides and transportation (if needed).”

Since there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the pristine surface, the area commands a penetrating quiet. Of course, there may be sounds of skates artfully carving the surface, laughter, or a hockey stick slapping a puck, but this is a peaceful, serene place.

Are you making a New Year’s resolution? Not sure where to start? Start with making a change for yourself. Then, for your family. And for your business or work. Next, maybe for your neighbour. Or for your entire community. Whatever you chose to do in 2019, think differently and innovate. Like this guy, who plows lakes for ice skating just because. . . . . #twowheeltractor #ColumbiaValleyBC #CED #invermerebc #shoplocal #placemaking @imagine_kootenay #iceskating #mountaintown #LakeWindermereBC #kootenaynationalpark #fairmonthotsprings #radiumhotsprings #edgewaterbc #briscobc #spillimacheen #canalflats #ColumbiaLakeBC #lakewindermerewhiteway #fatbike @elementalcycle @bicycleworks @columbiacycleandski @rentfarout #itstimetounwind @columbiariverpaddle #columbiariver #mtswansea #snowshoeing @radrecreationadaptedsociety @nipikamtnresort @inside_edge @cv_cycling_society @accessthevalley #volunteercv #newyears2019 #newyearsresolution #mrplow #giveback #zamboni #backyardrink @cvyouthnetwork @columbiavalleycommunityfdtn @hellobc @kootrocks @kootenaymountainculture
