This guy is running an insane 100 miles on Burnaby Mountain

Climate change cancelled a race Burnaby resident Verner Von Lofstrand really wanted to take part in so he’s putting all that hard training to good use on Saturday.

Von Lofstrand has started a GoFundMe campaign to raise $5,000 through his plan to run 100 miles on Burnaby Mountain.

Starting at 5 a.m. on Saturday, Von Lofstrand will attempt the BC 100Miler, with him running an 8.5-kilometre trail 19 times in the frigid temperatures expected Saturday.

Von Lofstrand has been training for a race of a similar distance, but it’s been repeatedly cancelled.

“Unfortunately, we have treated Mother Nature like crap and she is fighting back,” he wrote on the GoFundMe page. “Weather-related circumstances have cancelled at least three races I have been involved with in the last year. This was MY first race cancelled by weather. But I am not going to sit back and feel sorry for myself this weekend. I booked the time off. I bought all the supplies I needed. I rallied myself for 100 miles. So I am going to go get it.”

Half of the money raised, Von Lofstrand says, will go to the Rare Disease Foundation. The other half is earmarked for an environmental advocacy group of his choosing.

“I won't sit back and watch another race get cancelled and do nothing,” he wrote. “It's time we all take some responsibility.”
