This Saturday, June 8, the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada are celebrating World Oceans Day at the Aquarium with a variety of engaging activities highlighting the importance of our ocean and how individuals can help protect it. Guests can watch a live demonstration of how ocean acidification occurs, take a group stroll along the beach to learn about the shorelines in our own backyard, enjoy a bite of World Oceans Day cake, and find out more about this years theme, Together, we can make a difference!

Oceans play a central role in our daily lives. They control the climate, provide food and oxygen, are a means of transportation, and are crucial to many other basic necessities, says Jonathan Hultquist, manager of public programs, Vancouver Aquarium. We need to keep our oceans healthy in order to keep ourselves healthy, so were inviting everyone to join us on this special day to learn how we can help protect our oceans.

Did you know that

the oceans provide at least 50 per cent of the air we breathe?

more than 2.6 billion people (thats more than a third of the world) depend on the oceans as their primary source of protein?

more than 3 billion people depend on marine and coastal biodiversity for their livelihoods?

the oceans absorb about 30 per cent of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming?

These are just a few of the reasons that ocean health is so important and why the Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada are throwing a party to celebrate.

From 10am 5pm, Aquarium guests can enjoy a variety of activities (listed below) led by Vancouver Aquarium and WWF-Canada teams. The lovable mascots Bee Bop and Pandy will make special guest appearances, and staff from WWF-Canada, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup and the Vancouver Aquariums Ocean Wise program will lead fun and informative activities, including a fishing game and the creation of an art mural, just to name a few.
