Vancouver cop charged with sexual assault

Alleged assault occurred in Whistler in July

A 51-year-old Vancouver police officer has been charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident in Whistler last summer.

The B.C. RCMP posted a news release on its website Friday that said the Squamish RCMP received a complaint July 19, 2019 and launched an investigation.

“It is believed the alleged assault occurred a few days prior to the police receiving the complaint,” the release said. “During the course of the investigation, it was learned that the subject of the complaint was a serving Vancouver Police Department member.”

Charged is Jagraj “Roger” Berar, 51, of Surrey.

“The RCMP believes this was an isolated incident involving persons known to each other,” the release said. “Police do not believe the allegations are related to his employment as a police officer.”

Court records say the alleged assault occurred July 15. A ban on publication prevents the Courier from publishing the name of the complainant, or any information that could identify the complainant.

Conditions imposed against Berar include having no contact or communication with seven people, and that he must not consume alcohol unless he is in his own residence, “or if in a public place, only in the presence of your wife.”
