The votes have been verified and the Vancouver municipal election results are official.

On Wednesday Vancouver’s chief election officer declared the official results of the 2018 municipal election.

The election verification process this year included recounting more than 57,156 ballots from 50 polling stations. The large number of candidates (158) resulted in a longer than usual ballot which caused paper jams in the vote counting machines at some locations.

“As a result of this significant review, there are minor vote changes from the preliminary results for many candidates, but the final results do not change the final election standing,” reads a City of Vancouver press release.

Once verified, the vote totals for all candidates went down by between 55 and 170 votes.

In the end, mayor-elect Kennedy Stewart got 49,705 votes and second place finisher Ken Sim of the NPA got 48,748 — a difference of 957 votes.
