Vancouver police Wednesday morning released a few more details about the city’s fourth homicide of the year.

A 30-year-old Vancouver man was shot and killed Tuesday night while he sat alone in a car parked near West Fourth Avenue and Burrard Street. Vancouver police media relations officer Const. Jason Doucette said police received several 911 calls at around 8:30 p.m. reporting the sounds of gunshots in the area.

“Officers arrived to find a 30-year-old Vancouver man suffering from gunshot wounds in a vehicle, and unfortunately he died at the scene,” Doucette said.

Police tape remained up in the area Wednesday morning, blocking off the entrance to the alley behind businesses on the corner of Burrard Street and West Fourth.

Doucette that witnesses described a vehicle leaving the scene at around the same time and a few hours later, just after midnight, Vancouver firefighters were called to an SUV on fire on West 22nd Avenue near Arbutus Street.

“We have seized that vehicle,” Doucette said. “We have not yet confirmed it’s related to the homicide investigation but we’re looking into that.”

He said police believe the victim in this case was targeted, but would not say if the incident could be gang related.

“It’s still so early in the investigation, we’re about 14 hours since the shooting itself, we really have to figure out exactly what we’re dealing with before we start sharing information publicly,” Doucette said. “At this point it appears to be a targeted shooting. We don’t believe the general public is at risk.”

Police are asking anyone with any information about this incident, or who may have been driving in the area around that time and may have dash cam footage, to contact investigators at 604-717-2500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
