A 29-year-old Vancouver man is facing a first-degree murder charge in the Stanley Park stabbing death of Lubomir “Lubo” Kunik.

Last February, Kunik was attacked and killed on the seawall between Second and Third Beaches. His body was found shortly before 11 p.m. on Feb. 1 by a man walking his dog on the beach.

Vancouver police announced Tuesday afternoon that Tyler Lagimodiere was arrested Monday in the slaying.

“The murder is believed to be random in nature and not believed to be targeted,” department spokesman Sgt. Jason Robillard said in a press release. “Mr. Lagimodiere and Mr. Kunik did not know each other and never met prior to the incident.”

He added that the investigation was challenging and complex but investigators were able to find a forensic link between the evidence found at the scene and Lagimodiere.

“Our investigators worked diligently and used a variety of investigative tactics and resources to solve this crime,” said VPD Superintendent Mike Porteous, the officer in charge of investigative services. “Solving this murder has been a priority for the VPD and we want to thank the RCMP forensic laboratory, the Vancouver Park Board, and the general public for their assistance and support throughout this investigation.”
