Two men who sped away from police in a stolen, high-end SUV were soon caught in South Vancouver when they were both chased down by police dogs after clipping another car, crashing into a pole and trying to flee on foot.

On Feb. 21 just before midnight, Vancouver police attempted to pull over a black Porsche Cayenne for unspecified infractions near Cambie and West Pender. When the officers switched on the cruiser’s flashing lights, the Porsche sped away.

“Officers throughout the city were getting a quick view of that vehicle going by,” said VPD spokesman, constable Jason Doucette. “Due to potential risk to public, our officers chose not to pursue it.”

Officers did not follow the Porsche to avoid a high-speed chase but coordinated with Vancouver police across all four city districts and observed the fleeing car as it sped along city streets. The SUV was spotted at Clark and East Broadway, then southbound on Fraser Street and crossing 41st Avenue before finally heading west on Marine Drive.

Nearly 20 minutes after first drawing attention, the driver of the stolen SUV side-swiped a second vehicle and crashed into a light pole near Oak Street. The female driver of the other car had no reported physical injuries at the time.

Two men jumped from the Porsche and started running. They were chased down by two police dogs, working with canine units that were already in the neighbourhood.

The Vancouver Police Department is recommending charges of stolen property and dangerous driving.
