North Vancouver RCMP are trying to figure out what happened in a single-vehicle crash that sent a man to hospital with serious injuries Saturday evening.

The crash happened just after 6 p.m. on Marine Drive, west of Capilano Mall.

Police say the driver of a westbound BMW was stopped at a red light but lost control soon after the light turned green. The driver had barely made it out of the intersection when he spun 180 degrees to his right and hit the curb, causing the car to flip up onto the sidewalk where it hit a pole and came to rest on its side, said Sgt. Peter DeVries, North Vancouver RCMP spokesman.

North Vancouver City Fire Department members had to use the Jaws of Life to free the man.

“He was unconscious and he was pretty seriously injured,” DeVries said. “He was listed in serious but stable condition but he has since improved.”

The collision was captured on a nearby driver’s dashcam, which police have reviewed. Investigators have ruled out impairment and speed as factors in the crash but they are still trying to determine why the vehicle went into a spin. DeVries said police will be inspecting the vehicle, including checking the vehicle’s onboard computer.

“Sometimes it’s just the weirdest things that happen,” DeVries said.
