It’s almost summer time in Vancouver with the rising temperature. Pretty soon the days will be filled with barbeques, lounging around the beach and music festivals. Considering that Vancouver is known for its rainy weather, we’ll take any sunshine we can get as an excuse to get out.

If you were unsure if this weather was simply a teaser, we’ve had consistent sunshine for the last week that you can finally transition your winter closet into summer. It’s always surprising to pull out clothes from last summer that have been hibernating. Recently, I pulled out a pair of cut offs (not the good kind) that left me wondering what I was thinking and how “last season” it was.

While running out to replace your current wardrobe isn’t necessary, you can find ways to give your collection a much-needed facelift with just a few items.

For this season, focus on separates. Scalloped edge shorts are a must have in the closet. The material is lightweight enough to serve the practical purpose of staying cool in the hot weather but also has a feminine hemline that you can dress up or down with.

Go stripe or go home. Summer is all about nautical undertones in fashion, which means stripes. Roll up the sleeves and pair with your favorite bottoms (you can pretty much pick anything and it’ll match).

A great denim rendition brings us back to the laidback feel of what summer is all about. Cuffing the bottom of jeans has been a steady trend for summer. It even looks great paired with heels. The mix of casual and something dressy can provide an interesting balance that will surely score you points in the stylebooks if you find the right combination.

Summer is also about romance and an off the shoulder look says just that. Vancouver blogger Cara Mcleay’s play on a romantic off shoulder lace look was on point and perfect for summer.

Birkenstocks and I haven’t seen eye to eye in the past but a crisp white pair is a great twist on the often predictable flip flops. Birkenstocks have made a huge comeback for this summer so keep a look out for them around the city and even in the pages of Vogue.

Lace it up.White lace can stretch beyond weddings and summer is the perfect time to bring it out. Don’t forget your hat to give you some shade from the sun.

The final item is a bonus for those who feel like pushing the boundaries. Remember overalls? They’re back!
