6 Vancouver based brands that got it right

Because there’s nothing quite like homegrown talent.

Oh Vancouver. There are so many great things about this city we can all appreciate. The city has seen the bright lights of the Olympics, the scene of countless blockbuster movies, great landscapes and the birthplace of yoga pants. While most people might assume that Vancouver is passive when it comes to leading the way in innovation, there are some great talents right here in our city that have or will be making the big leagues.

1.     Native Shoes: I must admit that Native Shoes is a new discovery for me but its style and functionality makes this the quintessential Vancouverite footwear. Why? For one, it’s water resistant which we all know is a must have for a rainy city. In 2011, Native Shoes also collaborated with world-renowned New York based fashion designer Marc Jacobs on a “Jimmy Boot”. They’ve really elevated the line through the use of stylish prints. For spring, expect pastels and bright tones for women’s footwear.

2.     Lululemon: We may never live down the legacy that we created the yoga pants. Lululemon has had enormous success in making stylish yoga pants. Remember when women loved Lululemon yoga pants so much they were basically worn to any occasion? We’re certainly glad that through the years—and much finger waving—that people now have greater discretion on when it’s appropriate to wear these comfortable finds. Nonetheless, Lululemon is still one of the most successful clothing companies to come out of Vancouver.

3.     Vitae Juice: Most people in Vancouver are fairly invested in their health. Most local grocery stores have a dedicated organic section and the rise in popularity of farmer’s markets reaffirm that Vancouverites take their health seriously. Burgeoning brand Vitae Juice is combining all the great green ingredients (let’s be honest, Chlorophyll doesn’t always sound like the most delicious choice) into an unpasteurized and raw drink that will keep you wanting more fruits and vegetables.

4.     Herschel Supply Company: This Vancouver based company is all about stylish bags that you can tote around town. They focus on the details and keep things classic. Favorites include their city backpack and duffle bag which has a fun red and white stripe detail on the inside. It certainly didn’t take long before people embraced what this company has to offer. Herschel Supply Company turns 5 this year.

5.     PARTYSKIRTS: The Armstrong sisters are on fire for women under 30 in Vancouver. Their successful PARTYSKIRTS line has been featured in Teen Vogue complete with an exclusive collaboration. Not bad for a brand that grew out of two sisters need for something to wear to a party only to realize that there’s a niche they can fill in the industry. Their impeccable style continues to keep us intrigued on what they will come up with next.

6.     A Fashion Love Affair by Cara McLeay: When it comes to style, Vancouverite Cara McLeay is at the top of her game. Cara’s website “A Fashion Love Affair” combines her personal style diary with products she currently craves available to shop through her website. She also recently created her own styling iron, which garnered press from celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe to Fashion Magazine.
