Opinion: Driving twice the limit in Burnaby is no way to spend Family Day

Family Day on Monday was a chance to bask in the sunshine with your loved ones. It was also a chance for more drivers in Burnaby to stage a sequel to the Fast and the Furious.

Family Day on Monday was a chance to bask in the sunshine with your loved ones.

It was also a chance for more drivers in Burnaby to stage a sequel to the Fast and the Furious.

Unlike the movie franchise, however, there are actual police officers on the streets ready to catch them. Burnaby RCMP caught, ticketed and impounded two vehicles for excessive speeding on Marine Way near Boundary Road.

The drivers were really booking it – 100 km/h in a 50 km/h zone.

Going twice the speed limit isn’t just speeding, it’s excessive speeding, which is why the vehicles were towed. Tickets usually run around $368 and go up depending on how far over the speed limit a driver is going.

At the end of December 2019, some maniac was caught in this same stretch driving 136 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. That driver received a $483 ticket and had their vehicle impounded for seven days.

Excessive speeding gets your vehicle impounded for a week. Fines escalate with your speed, but they all get their vehicles impounded for only a week.

I think if the fines escalate, so should the number of days your vehicle is impounded.
