Scolding is for dogs, not children

To the editor: Re: "Do you scold other people's children? I do," Feb. 6. I have enjoyed your columns for years but must take you to task on the above terminology used in the article captioned above.

I have enjoyed your columns for years but must take you to task on the above terminology used in the article captioned above.

Although you are correct in principle, the word "scold" misses the more important point of teaching or educating. We train or scold a dog, as this is accomplished with our emotions more so than the words themselves.

As to our children we/they are best served by educating them through teaching. As I'm sure you're aware there is a large difference between train (scold) or teach (educate). Furthermore, when we teach with the quality of love, it becomes that much more effective. Scolding does neither with our young ones.

Please keep up the fine writing, Fiona. I don' t mean to scold you.
