A manner of speaking

Re: “Rant/Rave”, Jan. 19, 2017

In regards to “Mind Your Manners” appearing in the Jan. 19 edition, I, too, have encountered a lack of manners and politeness from the under-25-year-olds. Why are so many young people ignorant of proper manners? I am a woman in my 40s and always look and open the door for others when I enter or exit a doorway. I have encountered many people – mostly young women – waltzing by as if it is expected that I am their doorman. They don’t have the courtesy to say thank you as they pass me, or even look me in the eye to acknowledge me. Once, I opened a door that opened towards me, and before I could enter, a young woman (18 at the most) walked through without a glance in my direction. When I called out to her, “Someone just opened the door for you, and it would be nice if you said thank you,” she turned and told me to “fuck off.” Alas, I now find myself going through doors and not looking to see if anyone is near. I know the impoliteness is rubbing off on me, and that makes me very sad. Thanks for letting me rant; I just needed to get this off my chest. I really wish parents taught their children manners.

I hear you, John, about the skank who didn’t have the courtesy to say thank you for the bus change. I, too, get that behaviour all the time. When I hold a door open for someone and they don’t say anything, I always say “You’re welcome,” quite loudly and with a smile. Usually a sheepish “thank you” follows. Saying please and thank doesn’t cost anything, but shows who has manners and who doesn’t.

Misguided march

If only such crowds could be found protesting something of consequence: our being forced out of the city over greed, manufactured wars...anything. This was a mob in search of a cause.
