Sexting might actually improve satisfaction in your relationship

Sexting

Sexting has been a hot topic for a while now. Parents of teens were concerned that sexting increases the chances of teens having sex while parents who are sex positive believe that sexting is a healthy form of sexual expression that should be embraced rather than repressed.

For adults, sexting was a hot button issue in terms of whether it’s constituted as cheating if you’re engaging in that practice with someone outside of a committed relationship. In the workplace, employers are concerned with whether sexting was appropriate behavior while you’re working.

People may be hesitant to admit that they sext but according to research, eight out of ten people sext. Researchers at Drexal University conducted a study with over 870 participants ranging from 18-82 years in age.

Here’s what they found:

-88% of participants reported ever having sexted

-82% reported they had sexted in the past year

-75% said they sexted in the context of a committed relationship

-43% said they sexted as part of a casual relationship.

-Researchers found that greater levels of sexting were associated with greater sexual satisfaction, especially for those in a relationship.

-Participants who sexted the most considered the practice to be fun and carefree and were more likely to consider it has an expected aspect of a relationship.

This research tells us several things about sexting such as people of all ages sext (literally!). Relationship satisfaction may also increase via sexting because it’s a form of foreplay, which may enhance sexual satisfaction. Partners also freely communicate with each other about sexual needs and fantasies within a playful construct, which can increase emotional intimacy. Lastly, sexting may also increase “happy endorphins” within the body, which in turn, reinforces our liking toward a partner.
