STYLE WATCHING FOR SPRING WITH DESIGNER PETER STAS

When it comes to the staying power of an accessory, a great timepiece is always at the top of my list. You can simply throw a watch on and forego the fuss of pairing bracelets during the morning rush.

When it comes to the staying power of an accessory, a great timepiece is always at the top of my list. You can simply throw a watch on and forego the fuss of pairing bracelets during the morning rush. Maybe it’s time we give this often-understated accessory some time in the limelight.

Last week, Peter Stas, founder of Frederique Constant gave us some insight into his widely successful brand of watches. His trunk show in support of the World Heart Federation is currently being held at Holt Renfrew in Pacific Centre till February 23rd, 2014.

Without further adieu, let’s dive into some burning we had for this designer:

Q: What do you think makes your watches stand out above others?

A: The movement of watches is important to me. My wife and I have overseen the stages of production for our watches. We’re certainly dedicated to what we do. We wanted to showcase the mechanics of watches and decided to create windows for some of our timepieces to highlight that unique element. Some of the pieces within the mechanics are also monogrammed to add a personalized touch.

Q: Is working with your partner difficult at times since you’re around each other so much?

A: It seems to work for us. We both bring elements to the design table and she’s been involved since day one. We’re still together so that certainly says something.

Q: Who is Frederique Constant’s target market?

A: I would say our brand seems to appeal to professionals who are looking for a classical Swiss movement.  Our everyday watches allows for easy pairing with just about anything in your closet.

Q: Speaking of style, we saw a huge emergence of watches dominating style sections a few seasons ago. What are some spring trends in watches we should watch out for?

A: Classic styles have really been on trend for the last season. Steel bands and simplicity will be key factors in terms of style forecasting for men. For women, art deco will be the focal point for watches.  I think that fashion is going towards simplicity and functionality which appeals to consumers. We like to create a contemporary feel with classical designs.

Q: I noticed that one of your watches from your “Double Heart Beats” collection has a unique element of a double-faced band that was white on the top and red on the bottom.  It’s very stylish. Tell me about that piece.

A: The World Heart Federation was a charity that I’ve supported through the years. When you look at this watch, you can see the double heart beat aperture in the dial, which showcases the handcrafted mechanical movement that essentially acts as the beating heart of the watch.
