DNA and love

We’ve tried to explain why people stay single throughout time. Maybe your standards are too high or you’re secretly attracted to unavailable men? Magazines have dedicated a whole section to dating and keeping your man or pleasing your woman. What if the answer to why you’re single lies somewhere deeper like in your genetic code?

Researchers have turned to science to explain how DNA affects our relationships. In a recent study published in Scientific Reports, researchers looked specifically at the gene 5-HT1A to see the affects of it on our brain and love related behaviors.

The study consisted of 579 Chinese adults who submitted their hair samples and indicated whether they were in love or not. Findings showed that 60% of people with both G alleles (CG genotype) or one G allele were single. Conversely, only 50% of people with both C alleles (CC genotype) were single. The study concluded that the C and G allele has a definitive link to relationship status.

Basically, people who have the G allele are more likely to be single. However, this doesn’t mean you’re doomed since researchers highlighted that socioeconomic status, appearance and personality attributes all play an important role in whether you find love. More research has to applied to validate the study findings but it seems like now we can link genetics to relationship behaviors which is an exciting step forward.

The next time someone ask why you’re single, you can now blame it on your genes.
