Street style has grown into a phenomenon of its own. It serves as a point of inspiration and has directed the waves of what’s on trend. We’re moving into a new era where editors are not the direct influence on what’s trending anymore. Bloggers now have a large audience and it’s shifting the fashion industry towards what’s palatable for the general public. As a result, editors and fashion insiders are dictating “trends” through what they’re wearing and being photographed in. Editors often push for colorful and out of the box trends but they’re often seen wearing basics behind the scenes. People often wonder what’s their (editors, bloggers and fashion insiders) style secret? Turns out, it may not be as complicated as you think.

When it comes to street style, Model Caroline de Maigret is one of the most sought after person by photographers. While she’s often a muse for designer Karl Lagerfeld, you won’t see her in head to toe Chanel on her day to day.  She’s most likely wearing a pair of vintage Levi’s paired with a white t-shirt and a blazer or motorcyle jacket.

“It’s not about trends. It’s more about finding the right pieces that you can carry with you through the years. If there’s a military trend, I’ll put all my military-feeling clothes in the cupboard and then let them out two years later.” –Caroline de Maigret

Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director Jessica Diehl will often be spotted in a simple black, navy and ivory uniform. While she’s a Celine fan (she’s often seen in their tuxedo trousers and skirts), she’ll usually go for commercial pieces that are not presented on the runway.

“I tend not to buy looks from the runway, although I love them. Having seen the runway pieces several months before being able to buy them, many times I’ve moved on by the time they hit the stores.”- Jessica Diehl

Stylists and fashion industry professionals crave for timeless designs. The founders of e-commerce site the Line, stylists Morgan Wendelborn and Vanessa Traina Snow stick with a carefully curated uniform such as the perfect t-shirt or a pair of black cigarette trousers.

“We tend to look at things with an editor’s eye. People need very few things in their closet, so we wanted to find the best version of every one thing. That’s how people who work in the industry really dress.” –Vanessa Traina Snow and Morgan Wendelborn.

Building your own uniform requires you to figure out what you like and carefully editing your closet. “There is this cliché about Parisians that they have this effortless look. I really can’t be bothered changing my clothes. A good recipe is hard to change, you know?” says Caroline de Maigret.
