It’s one of the most well-known images from the 2011 Vancouver riots: an angry young bespectacled kid in a Canucks t-shirt wielding a bright green hockey stick, seemingly protecting a smashed-up Bank of Montreal.
The truth was slightly different. The kid was Jason Li and it wasn’t a picture of a passionate defender of the city of Vancouver, but one of an enthusiastic participant in the riot. A video showed Li using the stick to break the Bank of Montreal windows and reveling in the destruction.
Still, the photo certainly captured a moment of truly Canadian anger, so what better inspiration for the most famous angry Canadian of them all: Wolverine.

The artist of the cover didn’t have any idea what the photo was when he drew it, but was just instructed to ape the “Come at me, bro” meme of the image, with Deadpool thrown in because the kids love Deadpool.
