A boat fire under the Moray Bridge has closed a westbound section of Bridgeport Road in Richmond during rush hour traffic.

The fire – smoke from which could be seen for miles across the city – is understood to have started around 3:30 p.m.

As such, Bridgeport Road, west of No. 3 Road, was still closed westbound as of 4:30 p.m., with motorists being advised to take an alternative route.

That stretch of road is one of the main routes to Vancouver Airport’s main terminal.

It’s not yet clear what started the fire on the small boat, which is believed to have been moored under the bridge on the Fraser River’s middle arm.

The Richmond News has reached out Richmond Fire-Rescue for details.
