Police are hoping someone from the public can help identify a vehicle that caused one accident and narrowly avoided causing several others when the driver drove the wrong way along West Vancouver’s Highway 1 Monday evening.

Police received at least seven calls after a driver of what appeared to be a gray or silver Audi A4 was seen driving eastbound in the westbound lane of the Upper Levels highway between 6:25 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 12.

The wrong-way driver appeared to travel in the wrong lane from about Horseshoe Bay to either the Westmount or Cypress exit, said Const. Jeff Palmer, spokesman for the West Vancouver Police Department.

One driver of a Chevrolet Colorado mid-size pickup truck who swerved to avoid the car near Caulfeild ended up colliding with a public transit bus, said Palmer, resulting in minor injuries to a six-year-old girl who was a passenger in the truck.

A number of other drivers were forced to take evasive action to avoid collisions.

Palmer said police don’t yet know who was driving or why that person was driving the wrong way on the highway.

A driver heading east in the eastbound lane was able to capture a murky image of the vehicle from a dash cam.

Palmer said West Vancouver police are hoping to hear from anyone who may either know something about the incident or have other dash-cam images.
