Maintenance work is set to begin on the Knight Street Bridge Monday (Jan. 20) night.

According to TransLink, which owns and operates the bridge that connects Richmond and Vancouver, the rehabilitation work will be carried out between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., during which time a single lane will be closed in each direction.

Work carried out during the rehabilitation project will include concrete pier repairs, bearing and expansion joint replacement, as well as lighting upgrades for better visibility and energy efficiency.

Both the bridge’s crash cushion, which reduces damage to vehicles and motorists during a collision, as well as signage – including warning and regulatory signs, and pedestrian crosswalk signs – will also be replaced.

The bridge, which opened in 1974, has over 100,000 vehicle crossings during an average day, according to the transit authority.

While work is being completed overnight to minimize impacts to traffic, drivers should still expect delays, according to TransLink.

The rehabilitation work will be ongoing through spring.
