There is nothing like beautiful, solid-wood furniture, with a rustic touch, to add gorgeous accents to a home or business. And if that furniture is as environmentally friendly as it is eye-catching, it creates winning decor.
Sustainability is what keeps Josh Hooge and Steve McFarlane passionate about their work as owners of J&S Reclaimed Wood Custom Furniture in Vancouver.
Josh has been involved in woodworking since a young age. He learned carpentry from his father and both of his grandfathers, all traditionally trained craftsmen. At the J&S workshop he keeps the craft alive, building furniture and teaching new apprentices.
Steve studied woodworking throughout high school where he discovered a latent talent for the craft. Studying Business Marketing post-secondary enabled him to open up J&S Reclaimed Wood Custom Furniture in 2012 with Josh.
The J&S team locally salvages wood by assisting in heritage building demolitions, deconstructing barns, salvaging fallen logs, and collecting discarded pallets, turning unwanted material into quality handcrafted furniture.
“We want to preserve heirloom old-growth lumber and turn it into beautiful, lasting pieces of furniture that will be around for generations to come,” says Josh.
Clients can feel good about their purchases because not only do they get to have the furniture of their dreams, they also get to help the J&S team to keep hundreds of tonnes of wood out of the landfill, that would otherwise be burned for electricity.
“People are getting pretty conscious about sustainability,” says Steve. “Everyone wants to do their part in making a difference in the world.”
