The Healing power of Stillness

A photo that is making the rounds on social media recently, shows a young woman lounging in a hammock on a white sand beach with a blue ocean in the background. It suggests exotic places in the South Pacific or the Caribbean, and the stillness of the picture intimates that peace and stillness can be found someplace far away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives.

For British Columbians, we often think of finding peace and stillness in the mountains or forests or beaches of our beautiful province. But it occurred to me, that even if all the physical conditions, like in the photo are right for this stillness, our thoughts may be still like the proverbial hamster on the wheel going round and round; or like the endless shopping list of tasks to be completed that constantly nags us. In other words, despite outward appearances of stillness, our thoughts are not necessarily still, no matter where we are.

Is there a way to really find that deep, settled stillness we search for in near or far-away places? Can we still find it, even in the middle of a busy and noisy city like Vancouver? And can that quiet peace bring us healing for the problems that trouble us?

These questions are the topic of an engaging talk by Christian Science Practitioner and international speaker, Lari Snorek-Yates. She will explore with us how we can feel the healing power of stillness no matter where we are. Her talk focuses on finding that deep spiritual calm within ourselves that cannot be disrupted by fear or outward disturbances. She will share examples of how the Bible and the writings of healer and author, Mary Baker Eddy, have brought lasting peace and complete healing to individual lives, including her own.

The talk is free and is to be held on May 12 at 1pm
