Vancouver Opera is staging Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow, Oct. 20 to 28 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The comedic opera, set in fin-de-siècle Paris, tells the story of the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari (Lucia Cesaroni), who schemes to win the heart of the handsome Count Danilo (John Cudia), while suitors conspire to get their hands on the widow’s fortune.

The opera will be sung in German, with English dialogue and English surtitles.

The chorus includes Burnaby residents Melanie Krueger (soprano) and Mark Pepe (tenor), and New Westminster’s Thomas Lamont (tenor).

Orchestra members include Burnaby resident Lauri Lyster on percussion, New West's Phillip Crewe on timpani and Burnaby's Angela Cavadas, the associate concertmaster, on violin.

The Merry Widow is on Oct. 20, 25 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $50 to $175. See www.vancouveropera.ca.
