Anita Romaniuk: COPE

Candidate: Vancouver Park Board
Anita Romaniuk
Anita Romaniuk.

Anita Romaniuk was elected Parks Commissioner from 2002 to 2005, serving as Chair and liaison to the Vancouver Public Library Board and Vancouver City Planning Commission. As a former member of the Douglas Park Community Association’s Board of Directors and its Finance, Arts, and Park Improvement committees, Anita respects the Joint Operating Agreement between the Community Associations and Park Board to operate our community centres, and supports expanding our recreation facilities to keep pace with Vancouver’s growth.

In 2006, Anita joined the Mount Pleasant Community Association’s Pool Committee, and is a founder and Treasurer of the Vancouver Society for Promotion of Outdoor Pools, organizing to rebuild our lost neighbourhood pools. She joined the Save Our Parklands Association in 2008 and is now President, advocating for riverfront parks and trails, restoration of wetlands and streams, and heritage recognition of First Nations and historic fisheries.

Anita sees two main issues in this election for the Park Board. The first issue is what she sees as the appalling failure of the current Park Board to be accountable to their constituents through respectful public engagement. The second is the inability of the Park Board Capital and Operating budgets to keep pace with the size and needs of Vancouver. Anita is a proven advocate of maintaining aging recreation facilities and community centres, and pushing for new park space and facilities to meet new needs and those of historically park-deficient communities.
