My thoughts on Your Parks!

James Buckshon for Independent Park Board Commissioner

Born and raised in Vancouver and has lived in Oakridge, Kitsilano & Marpole

Bachelor of Arts (Fine Arts UBC).

Occupation: Music, theatre and art producer for Renegade Arts Society (nonprofit) & President of Renegade Productions Inc.

Member of Greenpeace and PETA.

Marital status: single. 9 beautiful nieces and nephews.

Policy:
To keep our parks as natural and beautiful as possible, to refrain from paving, or reducing our parks. To not allow large commercial restaurants on our parks and beaches. To create new parks where needed for residents of newly created neighbourhoods. To provide the work to keep our parks green by taking care of grass, replacing where necessary and to plant trees and grow gardens. To resist the easy way out of maintenance by paving.

What I’m for:
Planting grass, trees and gardens in Yaletown Park to replace the stone pavement
Fighting for a real park for Oakridge rather than an enclosed rooftop that only some people can access and no one can actually call a real park.

To replant the grass and repair the fountain on the once-beautiful Art Gallery north side that has degenerated into a broken fountain and bark mulch where the grass was.

To not allow any more commercial large restaurants on our parks and beaches such as Cactus Club English Bay and Boathouse Kits Beach and to examine the possibilities of removing these structures when their leases expire.

To not allow paving over of Vanier Park during the 8 months Bard on the a Beach is in hiatus, whereby such paving is simply to minimize the setup time and expense for Bard without benefit to the community.

To remove the metal structure at 18th and Main and plant trees and gardens where concrete and metal exist.

To not allow bike lanes on the grass at Kits Beach or Hadden Park.

To allow the community centres autonomy and say in responding to their community needs.

To finally get the park built promised by Concord Pacific decades ago.

To encourage the expression of citizens by not blocking dissenting opinions on twitter and social media.

To make the washrooms gender neutral but not the changing rooms unless approved by judicial review.

To oppose the building of a high rise overshadowing Emery Barnes Park.

To negotiate a phasing out of captured cetaceans at Vancouver Aquarium.

I will vote with like-minded parties to pass policy that protects and preserves our green space and natural parks.

I take the job very seriously as commissioner of the citizens of Vancouver’s parks, which they own and need trusted, caring people to look after their precious assets.

Thank you!
