Jane Bouey: Public Education Project

Candidate: Vancouver School Board
Jane Bouey
Jane Bouey.

Jane Bouey has been devoted to the defense and improvement of public education for nearly two decades.

As a parent who has raised a special needs child, while living in the inner city, she has seen firsthand the barriers many students face. Jane’s vision is to ensure that our schools are more welcoming, safer, and accessible for all.

Jane has witnessed fourteen years of underfunding. She has seen how public education has been undermined in BC. The situation is critical. It is now time to try something new. She joined with other parents, teachers, support workers and community members to form the Public Education Project – the first civic party in Vancouver to solely run candidates for school board.

Jane is experienced. She served two terms as a Trustee on the Vancouver School Board, including as Vice-Chair from 2008-2011. During both terms, Jane chaired the Board’s Education and Student Services Committee, and served on the VSB’s Special Education Advisory and Pride Committees.

Jane has made substantive contributions around several issues, including the ongoing struggle to secure resources for students with special needs. During Jane’s first term as a Trustee, she played a key role in the development and implementation of the Vancouver School Board’s policy on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. As a member of Egale Canada’s Education Committee, she contributes to developing safer school policy across Canada. Jane’s priorities have included strengthening the district’s anti-racism programs, Aboriginal education, and increased accessibility to education for low income students. She helped to create “Justice not Charity”, a group that held forums on family poverty and the creeping privatization of public education.

A past member of the City of Vancouver's Joint Council on Child Care, Jane has worked to expand accessible childcare in schools and across the city.

As a member of BC’s Farm to Schools advisory committee, Jane is deeply committed to food security, focusing on expansion of the Board’s food programs, and the creation of school gardens.

A former bookseller, Jane currently work as an executive assistant at a small provincial non-profit. Her volunteer activities include hosting Vancouver Co-op Radio’s award winning Media Mornings program.

Public education is at a crossroads. Jane is convinced that that voting for Public Education Project candidates will send a strong signal to the provincial government that public education needs to be fully funded, and that teachers have our support. Vote for Jane Bouey and Gwen Giesbrecht. Vote for Public Education.
