Massimo Rossetti: Vancouver First

Candidate: Vancouver Park Board

A list can tell you a story but only part of that story, a bit of background can give that story life. Massimo has an extensive, impressive list of participation in his community. Yet, it is when you get to know “Mass” that you have no doubt that the list is genuine.

From 1988 to 2000 he was a Fitness Committee Volunteer at Thunderbird Community Centre. Starting a pattern that would occur over and over again Massimo stepped in to the gym and stepped up to the plate when Thunderbird Neighbourhood Association needed help in acquiring new gym equipment, and as it turns out so much more.

Two years after joining the Fitness Committee he took on a new role working with and supervising at risk youth, which led to the creation of a youth council at Thunderbird Community Centre.

From 1995 to 1997 he was elected to represent his community on the Thunderbird Neighborhood Associations Board of Directors, continuing the work he had begun years earlier.

From 1997 to 2000 he was elected President of the Thunderbird Neighbourhood Associations Board of Directors. During that time he headed up the Capital Plan Building Committee undertaking a $1.2 million second floor building upgrade project at Thunderbird Community Centre. While a budget shortfall put the Capital Plan Project at risk, Massimo prevailed by reaching beyond his local community and seeking financial assistance from both the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Renfrew Park Community Association.

In 2001, while continuing to serve his local community at Thunderbird, Massimo focuses his attention to an even greater good when he joins the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreations Joint Operating Agreement Task Force.

In 2002 he is named Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreations Volunteer of The Year.

From 2003 to 2006 he served as an executive on Thunderbirds Board, and was also elected to serve as a director on the Champlain Heights Community Associations Board where he lent his knowledge and experience to Champlain’s Capital Plan, a site expansion and new childcare facility.

In 2005 the Associations Presidents Group and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation formed joint collaboration committees, Massimo was asked to participate on both the Risk Management Committee and the Membership Committee.

The Vancouver East Presidents Table is formed in 2007 to address childcare indemnification concerns. Massimo, having taken time off from being active on any association boards, is asked to chair this group. The VEPT go on to secure childcare indemnification under the City of Vancouver.

In 2008 Massimo is elected to the Hastings Community Association Board of Directors and takes on task after task. He is then elected to Vice President,m and eventually President of The Hastings Community Association in 2013.

Of course there is so much in between but as impressive as Massimo’s community accomplishments are they are even more remarkable when you consider they are done with little fanfare, few accolades and, except the Volunteer of the Year, not many pictures in the paper.
