Last weekend to bask in the largest winter lights display in Metro Vancouver

Coquitlam's Lights at Lafarge is celebrating its last weekend of operation

This is the last weekend to bask in the glow of the Lights at Lafarge, the largest free outdoor winter light show in the Lower Mainland.

The 1.2 kilometre Lafarge Lake loop — 1,600 steps for those counting — is made up of 410,000 LED bulbs, forming more than 10 zones, a 90-foot caterpillar, an illuminated outdoor dining table and woodland garden. In the fantasy forest you’ll find an elfin tree house, as well as glowing woodland creatures, salmon, maple leaves, lotus flowers and a giant mushroom.

An army of city staff and 650 Light Brigade volunteers began work on the display in early November, designing, fabricating and installing the unique, lighted art. New this year is the addition of rope lighting around the city’s 20-foot whale eco-sculpture that’s based upon a design by First Nations artist Bill Reid, which will be floating in an LED sea of more than 10,000 twinkling lights.

MARIO BARTEL/THE TRI-CITY NEWS Andre Dionne said it takes him nearly three days to affix more than 50 strands of lights along the rail fencing on the east side of Lafarge Lake.

For a bite to eat, concession stands are located in parking lot D and will be open from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. The light display, on the other hand, will be lit from dusk until 11 p.m.

The city of Coquitlam recommends using public transit, walk or carpool, as the lake can get bust this time of year. If you are taking SkyTrain, get off at the Lafarge Lake-Douglas Station. From there, it’s an easy walk to Town Centre Park and the display.

Just follow the glow.
