A trio of teenagers who lost their way on a hike in West Vancouver had to be escorted out by rescue crews Tuesday night.

West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, as well as police, were contacted at 7:15 p.m. last night after three young hikers got lost in the hill just north of Madrona Crescent in the Horseshoe Bay Neighbourhood and decided to call for help.

“I don’t think they were expecting the night to creep up on them as quickly as it did,” said assistant fire chief Jeff Bush, of West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services.

At the top of Madrona Crescent, where it intersects with Wellington Avenue, is a short trail that leads to the top of a large, forested hill, according to Bush.

Although the teens had no trouble reaching the top of the hill, they couldn’t find the trail out afterwards as it had become too dark, he said.

“It’s a pathway, but it’s very dark obviously when nightfall hits. They weren’t able to find the trail,” he said.

Rescue crews arrived at the scene within minutes and made their way to the top of the hill where they made verbal contact with the three youth and were able to walk them out with the aid of flashlights, said Bush.

The young hikers were uninjured when crews arrived, but were definitely “just a little bit cold” as they weren’t prepared for the sudden change in temperature as it got later, he said.

“Make sure you’ve got a charged cell phone and know where you’re going,” added Bush. “Bring a light of some kind.”
